And as several have mentioned, a 45" height allows you a LOT of storage room underneath the layout. So I'd say your 42" height is right in the ballpark. Tom

One of the things to consider is if you have children or grandchildren who are going to play on it. Mine is 36" from the floor to the top and I also built a step around it. Web6 mei 2024 · The ideal benchwork height for HO is elbow height. For me, at 6'-3" tall, that's 54" off the floor. For N scale, I think the ideal height is just below your armpits (say an inch below). That gets those tiny trains up where you can really see them. Put another way, you can also use elbow height + 3" to get you in the same ballpark.
